# Notifications and feedback

Petrel uses several feedback mechanisms to communicate operation status, errors, and important information. Each serves a specific context and urgency level.
## Feedback mechanisms overview

Component
Use case
Persistence
Inline validation message
Field-level error or warning in a form
Until field is corrected
Alert bar (notification banner)
Page or pane-level warning, success, or info
Manual dismiss or auto (5+ seconds)
Status bar message
Current operation status, progress text
Until operation completes
Toast / transient notification
Background operation completed successfully
Auto-dismiss after 5–10 seconds
Progress dialog
Long-running operation with determinate or indeterminate progress
Until operation completes
Error dialog
Critical error requiring user action
Manual dismiss
## Progress indicators

Use determinate progress (percentage bar) when the total duration can be estimated. Use indeterminate progress (animated indicator) only when duration genuinely cannot be estimated. Always show a cancel action for operations over 3 seconds, where cancellation is technically possible.

## Do and Don't

DO
Show operation progress in the Petrel status bar for background operations. Background tasks that complete silently leave users uncertain about whether their action was registered. A brief status bar message confirms the action.
DON'T
Don't auto-dismiss error messages or warnings. Errors require acknowledgment. A transient error notification that disappears after 3 seconds may be missed by users focused on another area of the interface.
## Accessibility requirements

- All notification types must use colour + icon + text (never colour alone). See [Notifications](/solutions/ocean-petrel/petrel-guideline/accessibility/notifications).
- Status changes must be announced to screen readers using live region notifications.
- Transient notifications must remain visible for at least 5 seconds (WCAG 2.2.1 timing adjustable).
